Вопрос: What is GlobalLab?
Ответ: GlobalLab is a collaborative learning platform that delivers cutting-edge education through student investigations. GlobalLab is a web-based educational resource and learning environment designed to support science courses. Today, we offer courses in biology, geography, and social and environmental studies. We plan to extend our curriculum to include physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
Вопрос: What makes GlobalLab unique?
Ответ: The core idea of the project is to connect classrooms worldwide for better learning. At GlobalLab, we are true believers in student collaborations. If students in different parts of the globe perform investigations (make observations and take measurements using standard protocols), and compare and analyze their results together, they will transform from being passive knowledge consumers into active knowledge constructors. They will participate in obtaining data independently to identify patterns, find causal relationships, describe the laws of science, and even make their own discoveries. Students’ motivation increases when they are knowledge builders rather than knowledge consumers. They are introduced to the scientific method and learning becomes more relevant to their lives. Additionally, when they share their results with other GlobalLab classes, they recognize that they are part of a global student community. They learn science by practicing science.
Вопрос: How does it work?
Ответ: As the platform for inquiry-based learning solutions, GlobalLab provides students and teachers with: - research techniques;
- access to the project database where GL participants place their findings (reports, tables, charts, and graphs);
- access to GL maps and graph constructors for data analysis;
- access to secure forums for discussions on investigations and GL activities.
Вопрос: Where and when can I use GlobalLab?
Ответ: GlobalLab is designed so you can easily incorporate it into your school curriculum to support one or more science courses, or use it as additional material for specific topics or lessons. Alternatively, you can use Global Lab as curriculum for after-school activities.
Вопрос: How can I use GlobalLab?
Ответ: GlobalLab's modular structure provides educators with complete freedom for using the curriculum. The complete GL course is designed for one academic year and is divided into several stages. Each stage consists of collaborative learning units called Collaborative Learning Units (CLUs). Each CLU provides you with texts, photos and videos, downloadable multimedia lessons (MMLs), as well as spreadsheets for data input, processing, and analysis. The spreadsheets are embedded in the shared GL database.
Вопрос: Who can participate in the project?
Ответ: Any group of students (a school class or an after-school team) can participate. Starting in the 2011/12 academic year, we also welcome “family teams”: home-schooled children and their parents.
Вопрос: How much does it cost?
Ответ: Participation in the project is absolutely free of charge. GlobalLab expresses its gratitude to Mr. Dmitri Zimin and the Dynasty Foundation for their support of our project.
Вопрос: Do I need any special equipment?
Ответ: All you need is at least one computer, a projector, and Internet access. Your class will certainly benefit if your school can provide probes, photo and video equipment, and a computer or a laptop for each student, but these are not prerequisites for participation.
